Zelda-like 'A Knight's Quest' launches on Xbox One and it's awesome (update)

What you need to know

  • A Knight's Quest is an open-world experience from Sky 9 Games.
  • It's supposed to be a modern take on the Zelda-like titles of old.
  • It's currently available on Xbox One and other platforms.
  • You can purchase A Knight's Quest for $25 on the Microsoft Store.

Updated October 17, 2019: We've added some more impressions of the game to help you make a purchasing decision.

A few weeks ago, we highlighted a game A Knight's Quest which is essentially Zelda meets Sunset Overdrive. You can run along walls and have to solve a variety of puzzles to prevent the apocalypse. Of course, there's a lot of sword and shield combat thrown in there. Luckily, the game is now available on Xbox One for $25.

According to publisher Curve Digital, you step into the shoes of Rusty, a clumsy adventurer who accidentally triggers the end of the world. However, it's up to you to stop it. Unfortunately, this isn't an easy task at all. Just like the Zelda series, there are huge bosses to take on and a lot of obstacles to get past.

Rusty begins his adventure with just a trusty sword and basic shield, but he'll soon unlock Spirit Powers – spectacular abilities which have the power to transform not only himself, but also the world around him. For example, you can use the powers of fire, ice, and time in battles or to solve puzzles. This is where the game really picks up.

We've been playing A Knight's Quest for a few weeks and absolutely love it. While it may not be as refined as other games from a sound perspective, the visuals are amazing, and the controls are responsive. It's unclear if the title is Xbox One X Enhanced, but it looks stunning on a 4K display. It definitely looks much better than your standard 1080p game.

If you're in the market for a somewhat casual experience between those heavy-hitters like Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, be sure to give this one a go. Since A Knight's Quest is from a smaller studio, the open-world environment isn't that vast. However, it does have a lot of variety. You'll traverse a variety of landscapes like caves to frozen mountaintops. While the combat is somewhat simple, until you activate special abilities, the platforming is the highlight of the game.

Luckily, the responsive controls make that easy. You have to time your jumps and be careful of what's below. My only complaint about the game is about its limited set of animations. It would've been nice to see some variety. However, for $25, you're still getting a gorgeous open-world game that's a lot of fun.
