Dynabook's new Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 laptops sport Wi-Fi 6 and premium specs

What you need to know

  • Dynabook revealed a refresh to its premium laptop line with the new Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 laptops.
  • Both laptops include Intel's 8th Gen Whiskey Lake processors, along with Wi-Fi 6 and instant-on capabilities.
  • Following the two premium additions is the Portégé A30, which sits just below the X laptops in terms of specs.

Just a few months after Toshiba rebranded to Dynabook in the U.S., the company today unveiled its first set of premium laptops under its new name. Called the Portégé X30 and Tecra X40, the two laptops look like they're built for business, but their chassis are hiding a surprising list of premium specs.

The most eye-catching of the two is the Tecra X40, which packs a 14-inch FHD display with a touch-enabled option. Inside, you can equip the Tecra X40 with Intel's slate of 8th gen Whiskey Lake processors, ranging from the Core i3-8145U up to the Core i7-8665U. There's also the option for up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage, either SATA or PCIe.

The Portégé X30 offers the same specs, but in a slightly different 13.3-inch form factor. Again, you can go with a touch or non-touch FHD display, along with the same RAM, process, and storage options.

Both the Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 have fingerprint readers by default, and you can add a SmartCard reader if necessary. There's also a configuration that throws in an IR camera for Windows Hello verification if that's your thing.

Where the two X-series laptops get pretty interesting is that they include an option for the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, also known as 802.11ax. There's a lot to Wi-Fi 6 that makes it a pretty big leap over its predecessors, but its inclusion means that you'll be future-proofed for the standard's faster transfer speeds, better performance with lots of devices on the network, and less battery drain when connected to an 802.11ax network.

Dynabook says that it has improved both the cooling with a new fan design on the Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 while also making the Portégé X30 lighter. Support for Windows 10's Modern Standby will allow the laptops to stay connected to your network and turn on from a sleep state without missing a beat.

Rounding things out is the 13.3-inch Dynabook Portégé A30, which is a slightly less-premium laptop that sits just below the X-series entries. You're looking at similar styling as the Portégé X30 here, but with a lower max RAM capacity of 24GB and processor options ranging from Intel's Celeron 3867 up to the Core i7-8650U. Otherwise, up to 1TB of storage, a fingerprint sensor, and the option for an IR camera are also present here.

Portable (and affordable) power accessories we love

Each and every one of these charging gadgets will keep your favorite gear and gadgets going for longer, and none of them costs more than $30.

VisionTek 8,000 mAh micro-USB power bank ($13 at Dell)

This compact dual-output powerbank can speedily recharge any and all your devices, thanks to a two-amp "fast charge feature," using its micro-USB out port. Its simple design includes an LED indicator, and it costs about as much as a single ticket to the movies.

Panasonic eneloop AA batteries (From $13 at Dell)

Panasonic's rechargeable batteries are among the best available, and just a couple of them will keep your favorite remote, mice or other peripherals powered up when you need them. They're also eco. And the company's affordable charger fits and charges both AA and AAA batteries at the same time.

Belkin Qi Wireless Charging Pad ($30 at Dell)

This unobtrusive Qi wireless charging pad looks good (and kind of like a UFO …) and easily charges all your Qi-compatible device up to 5W. Its LED indicator lights up when you're charging. And it costs just $30.
