Arabian Nights-themed 'City of Brass' up for preorder on Xbox One [updated]

Recently, Uppercut Games announced that its Arabian Nights-inspired first-person adventure called "City of Brass" should launch on May 4, 2018 on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4. The studio consists of BioShock veterans who are masters of the theme.

Updated March 10, 2018: Today, Uppercut Games told us that City of Brass runs at 4K on Xbox One X but only 1080p on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 4 Pro. It doesn't use an upscaling or checkerboarding solution. All versions run at 30 FPS or higher. Currently, the Xbox One X version hovers between 30 FPS to 60 FPS but Uppercut Games plans on further optimizing the game before launch to eliminate that problem. Lastly, the title also supports Mixer interactivity on Microsoft's systems.

According to the studio, City of Brass is set in a mythological metropolis undone by its love of gold. The game follows a cunning thief who wants to obtain a fabled treasure hidden in the heart of the opulent ruins. Armed with a bullwhip and blade, players will lash and slash their way through the legions of damned souls that haunt the legendary labyrinth while pilfering relics and other riches contained within its walls.

After every death, the streets shift to ensure that no two playthroughs are ever the same. The game features "rogue-lite" mechanics so after every death you're just that much more experienced for the next run by unlocking new items. If you're still having a hard time, there are modifiers which increase damage output, give more health, and make enemies significantly easier. This makes City of Brass one of the most accessible rogue-lite games out there.

The whip is an important weapon because, not only is it used to disarm, trip and stun enemies, but it also allows you to swing to safety or capture objects that are out of reach. You can also use the whip to trigger traps. Let's say you see an exploding trap on the ground with an enemy close to it, you can hit it with the whip and instantly kill the foe.

City of Brass went up for preorder on Xbox One today and features Xbox One X enhancements. According to the listing, the title supports "4K Ultra HD" and "HDR10". It's unclear if the game is native 4K or uses some upscaling or checkerboarding solution. We've reached out to the developer and shall update you as soon as we receive a response. Until then, if you're interested in the title, be sure to preorder it on the Microsoft Store for $19.99.
