Kingdom Hearts III early build achieves native 4K resolution on Xbox One X (update)

Updated February 8, 2019: The final build of the game runs at 1440p on Xbox One X.

Kingdom Hearts III is coming to Xbox One on January 29, 2019 with Xbox One X enhancements in tow. In light of this announcement, many gamers have been asking Square Enix about the resolution and frame rate on Microsoft's new console.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Kingdom Hearts III was targeting 60 FPS on Xbox One X and ran the game quite well despite some frame rate fluctuations. Now, it seems like Digital Foundry was able to confirm the resolution as well. According to the outlet, the title was running at native 4K resolution with an unlocked frame rate during E3 2018. The outlet also made it clear that the build was running on an Xbox One X development kit and they didn't expect the PlayStation 4 Pro to render at native 4K.

It's great to see Square Enix push the game technically so that it provides a crisp and smooth experience to Xbox One X owners. Hopefully the developer will be able to optimize Kingdom Hearts III for Xbox One X so that it runs at 60 FPS all the time. If not, the team should give us the option to play with an unlocked frame rate or cap it to 30 FPS to avoid any fluctuations.

Kingdom Hearts III is an action role-playing game that combines the universes of various Disney franchises and Final Fantasy. It sounds almost like it shouldn't work, but somehow, it just does, and the franchise has won itself millions of fans across the world. This is the latest entry in this long-running series which has been mostly exclusive to Nintendo and PlayStation systems up until now.
