Sea of Thieves 'Hungering Deep' expansion gets cryptic trailer and release date

A few weeks ago, Rare promised to bring the "Hungering Deep" expansion to Sea of Thieves in May. Since then, the studio has been teasing "monstrous" content, but today we got a cryptic trailer which gives us lots of hints. Players can expect many new challenges with the update.

It seems like the Hungering Deep will add a new creature like a massive shark or crab claw. You can summon it by working with other galleons and playing music. However, the old pirate's words are rather cryptic so playing music might actually soothe the creature. We'll just have to wait until May 29, 2018 to find out because that's when the free expansion drops on Xbox One and PC.

Sea of Thieves is an exploration-based pirate game which launched on March 20. Rare is known for many famous franchises including Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, and GoldenEye. However, in recent years, the team focused on developing Kinect games for Xbox One and Xbox 360. This was a curious decision, so when Phil Spencer became Head of Xbox in 2014, he assigned Rare a new project. Sea of Thieves is a shift for the developer and a concept the team hasn't tackled before.

The game is currently available at retailers for $59.99 or as part of the monthly $9.99 Xbox Game Pass subscription. The game features Xbox One X enhancements and Xbox Play Anywhere support.
