What you need to know

  • 4A Games has shared more about the next-generation upgrade for Metro Exodus.
  • It runs at 4K 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PS5, with ray-traced global illumination and other new features.
  • This upgrade will be completely free and is set to arrive sometime later in 2021.

We already knew that 4A Games was working on a free next-generation upgrade for its 2019 title Metro Exodus and now, the developers have shared more about what console players can expect. On Xbox Series X and PS5, the upgrade will allow Metro Exodus to run at 4K 60 FPS. The Xbox Series S version is currently targeting 1080p, with the framerate targeting 60 FPS.

All three consoles will benefit from Ray Traced Global Illumination and Ray Traced Emissive Lighting, as well as the ability to change the field of view (FOV) and heavily reduced load times thanks to the ultra-fast SSDs used as internal storage. There's also going to be some platform-specific upgrades, with the Xbox versions benefitting from spatial audio and low controller latency enhancements, while the PS5 version will utilize the DualSense haptic feedback.

4A Games isn't stopping there though, as there's also going to be a PC Enhanced Edition, with new advanced ray-tracing reflections and DLSS 2.0 support. This will be a free upgrade for anyone who has already bought Metro Exodus for PC. There's no doubt this version of the game will be visually stunning but you'll want to have one of the best PCs for playing Metro Exodus in order to make sure it runs well.

There's no exact timeframe but these upgrades are currently slated to arrive at some point later in 2021.
