Large OLED displays are a relative rarity in laptops right now, but Samsung is looking to change that. The Korean tech giant announced today that it plans to begin mass production on 15.6-inch 4K OLED display panels next month, potentially heralding the arrival of some exceptionally crispy displays in laptops later this year.
Assuming you're a fan of color saturation, OLED displays vastly outclass their LCD counterparts. They're able to produce black levels that are much deeper than typical LCD panels, and colors that are generally more vivid.
Samsung says that its new pane will be able to adjust brightness from 0.0005 to 600 nits, hitting a dynamic contrast ratio of 120,000:1 and able to display up to 34 million colors. Compared to traditional LCD displays, Samsung claims that it can display blacks that appear 200 times darker and whites that are twice as bright.
"Our 15.6-inch UHD OLED panel provides the most suitable display solutions for carry-on IT devices with outstanding HDR enhancements, unparalleled color reproduction and much-improved outdoor visibility. We have no doubt that our new OLED display will offer a much superior visual experience to notebook users worldwide," said Jae-nam Yun, head of the marketing team at Samsung Display.
We've already heard some hints of OLED panels that are coming to 15-inch laptops later this year, including the new HP Spectre x360 and Razer Blade 15 Advanced. It will be interesting to see if Samsung's new panels are what ultimately ends up inside.
