What you need to know

  • Killer Instinct is a legendary fighting game that stands alongside greats like Tekken and Mortal Kombat.
  • While many Xbox fans adored Killer Instinct, the game and franchise have been in limbo for several years now.
  • In a recent interview, developer Iron Galaxy revealed that they'd consider working on Killer Instinct again, if given the opportunity.
  • While confirmation of nothing, Killer Instinct fans have been asking Microsoft for a sequel for a long time now.

Killer Instinct is a generally fantastic fighting game in the same vein as Tekken and Mortal Kombat for Xbox consoles and PC. The game was originally released in 2013 as a continuation of the franchise, and was supported for several years afterward before eventually being essentially abandoned. For years now, the dedicated player base that still adores Killer Instinct has been asking for a Killer Instinct revival or sequel, but their pleas have seemingly fallen on deaf ears at Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios.

In an interview with SegmentNext, Killer Instinct Iron Galaxy answered lots of questions about their studio, future projects, and more. One of these questions asked Iron Galaxy if they'd be interested in working on Killer Instinct again. Shekhar Dhupelia, general manager at Iron Galaxy, had this to say:

We loved working on Killer Instinct, and we had a great time supporting that community. They still ask us to update that experience every day on social media and we really appreciate the enduring enthusiasm. Like any other opportunity that comes our way, if KI ever presented itself again, we'd consider it.

Of course, this isn't confirmation of any plans for the Killer Instinct franchise, and absolutely does not indicate that Iron Galaxy is already working on a sequel for the series. Still, this is yet another ray of hope for Killer Instinct fans that have been asking Microsoft to remember their unique fighting game.

During the interview, Iron Galaxy also revealed that they're working on "multiple projects" right now, including for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PS5.

Killer Instinct is still a great game, and is currently available through Xbox Game Pass. If you're a fan of fighting games, Killer Instinct is one of the best Xbox Game Pass games around.
