Luminar 4 debuts with automatic sky replacement filter for your photos

What you need to know

  • Luminar 4 is set to launch this fall as the next big update for the photo editor.
  • Developer Skylum is teasing several new features in the run-up to its launch.
  • The first major new feature to debut is automatic sky replacement, which allows you to tweak the look of skies in your photos without much hassle.

Developer Skylum has announced Luminar 4, the next major version of the photo editing app, will launch this fall. Ahead of the update's launch, Skylum is teasing several new features for Skylum 4, and the first is the new sky replacement tool.

Sky replacement does exactly what it says on the tin, allowing you to easily reaplace the sky in your photographs while taking all of the hard work out of the procedure. Using a mix of AI smarts, the feature can change the look of a bland sky to something more inviting, tweaking the rest of your photograph to match the lighting.

Typically, to accomplish such a task, you'd have to manually adjust layers and use tools like smart selection, brushes, and masking. Luminar 4 will take all of those steps out of the process and automatically adjust the sky in your photos and apply the desired effects to the rest of the scene.

There's no solid release date for Luminar 4 just yet, but Skylum expects the update to launch this fall. The company is also planning a beta testing period ahead of launch. For now, you can check out Luminar 3 from $70 at Skylum.
