Is Samsung EVO Select a good memory card for Raspberry Pi?

Best answer: With faster than average read and write speeds, the EVO Select from Samsung is an excellent choice for your Raspberry Pi. Get the 128GB model for the best value, but you will have to buy it from Amazon.Amazon: Samsung EVO Select 128GB microSD card ($29)Amazon: Raspberry Pi 3+ ($39)

The EVO Select is really fast

The Raspberry Pi runs the whole OS directly off of the microSD card so the card needs to be quick. The EVO Select by Samsung is more than capable, with a read speed of up to 100MBps and a write speed of up to 90MBps. Normally these speeds are reserved for 4K video recording but having them available for the Pi can only be a good thing, especially if you are using the Raspberry Pi as a server or anything with a large number of operations.

It is worth noting that the Raspberry Pi 3 only runs at 20MBps so the EVO Select may seem like overkill, however, future proofing your microSD card is never a bad thing. You can use the EVO Select moving forward with any new upgrades to the Raspberry Pi.

I use my Raspberry Pi as a controller for my 3D printers. Using an operating system called OctoPrint, my Raspberry Pi is running almost 24 hours a day as it controls and records my 3D prints. The EVO Select does a fantastic job of running the OctoPrint software as well as having plenty of room to store the HD recordings. (Getting Windows IoT Core up and running on Raspberry Pi is easy, too.)

There are multiple size options

With the 32GB option starting as low as $9 there are four sizes available for you to choose from. I prefer the 128GB version as it gives the most value per GB of memory, but you may want to buy multiple smaller cards so you can install different OSes on each to allow you to really get the most from your Raspberry Pi.

The EVO Select comes in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB options, all of which have the same high-speed data transfer and the same value for money.

You can only buy it from Amazon

Just as a word of warning: You can only buy the EVO Select microSD card online at Amazon. The EVO Select is a rebranding of the EVO Plus, and it is exclusive to Amazon and has all the same features as the EVO Plus.

Amazon is still a great place to buy microSD cards anyway, and if you are already a Prime member you'll get free the two-day shipping. If you really need your microSD card as soon as possible the one-day shipping is only $3.99 extra as well so you can get started with your Raspberry Pi straight away.
