Operation Void Edge kicks off Year 5 with Oryx and Iana

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege locks down its first Year 5 update this March with the arrival of Operation Void Edge. Ubisoft's hit tactical shooter goes interstellar, introducing two new contrasting recruits, coupled with the latest rework of an existing locale. With over 55 million players registered and record-high revenue, the Void Edge release kickstarts a new two-year roadmap, establishing robust foundations for the next decade of Rainbow Six.

Oryx and Iana take center stage with Operation Void Edge, the latest additions to the counterterrorism ensemble, each with unique abilities within the gameplay meta. Defensive heavyweight Oryx is shaping up as a smashing addition, bringing heightened agility to roaming. While defined by the potential to charge walls, his burly physique also allows for hatch climbing with ease. Former astronaut Iana brings the art of deception to attackers, replicating her likeness is holographic form, with full mobility to trick players.

Void Edge also revisits the existing Rainbow Six Siege map Oregon, adapting the weathered compound with new gameplay flow and a refreshed visual palette. The rework may be disorientating for some, bringing much-needed refinements, but also blocking up former routes. Among the most impactful are changes to the basement, opening up the space for easier access, with a new staircase and hallway to eliminate chokepoints. And with modern styling, it's now more competitively viable moving forward.

Void Edge saw an unveiling on February 16, 2020, at the Six Invitational, posing as the game's annual Montreal homecoming. The update has since received an early access period via the Test Server (TS) on PC, welcoming players to tackle bugs ahead of full availability. With Void Edge fast approaching for March 10, Ubisoft readies to wind down the TS, preparing for live server deployment.

Ubisoft's isn't talking firm dates for Operation Void Edge, as standard with every Rainbow Six Siege update. The team rarely discusses updates until 24 hours before deployment, at which point the developer provides a firm release schedule, with planned downtime per platform.

However, well-established release trends make it easy to pin down the Void Edge release date with relative certainty. Following its February 16 reveal, with public TS availability from February 18, Ubisoft hosts three weeks of testing before launch. Rainbow Six Siege updates regularly release on Tuesday, putting Operation Void Edge on track for March 10, 2020. Some updates have seen delays into Wednesday, potentially pushing the launch toward March 11, 2020. Assuming the usual deployment times, Ubisoft will deliver a staged, per-platform rollout, spanning 9 AM ET to 12 PM ET.

In the meantime, Rainbow Six Siege's Year 5 Pass is now live on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, providing early access to upcoming Operators Iana and Oryx, alongside a ton of exclusive cosmetics and bonuses. It also comes cheaper than past years, as Ubisoft adapts its approach to Operators throughout Year 5.
