Destiny 2 heading to Steam, going free-to-play soon

What you need to know

  • Destiny 2 is possibly going free-to-play soon.
  • A new cross-save feature is coming to Xbox One and PC.
  • The title is coming to Steam.
  • You can purchase the game for $13 on Amazon.

Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter from Bungie, the original developers behind the Halo and Marathon franchises. While the team's shared-world shooter was incredibly popular at launch, it has since witnessed heavy drops in player engagement. Due to this, Activision and Bungie also parted ways, and it looks like the studio is trying out new business models.

Today, Engadget posted an article which stated that Destiny 2 was going free-to-play, and will be rebranded to "Destiny 2: New Light." Keep in mind that the base game and its Year One content will only be available for free. You can read some of the other takeaway points from the accidentally-published article below. Twitter user "chrisslaughter" managed to capture screenshots just in the nick of time!

  • The Destiny 2 "Shadowkeep" expansion launches on September 17.
  • Veteran players will be able to purchase standalone content like expansions within the free-to-play model.
  • A new cross-save feature is coming to Xbox One and PC, but not PlayStation 4 it seems.
  • Destiny 2 will launch on Google Stadia in November, but it's unclear if that version supports cross-save.
  • The game is coming to Steam.
  • Bungie is eliminating PlayStation 4-exclusive content.

In a world where Fortnite dominates due to its free-to-play model and cosmetics, it makes sense that Bungie would want to adopt a similar plan. The game desperately needs more players at the moment. Only time will tell if this will be successful.

Do you still play Destiny 2? Or do you prefer Fortnite? Let us know. There are a lot of "looter-shooters" out there, and with Borderlands 3 right around the corner, Destiny 2 has its work cut out.
