What you need to know

  • Minecraft is currently doing a "How We Make Minecraft" YouTube series discussing various factors that play into, well, making Minecraft.
  • The series has been comedic and informative, and is a great way for any Minecraft fan to learn a little bit more about the game.
  • The fourth episode just dropped, and it tackles the sound design that goes into all the audio in Minecraft.
  • This includes the music, random sound effects, and why Steve and Alex don't have anything to say.

Minecraft is having a very busy year, with the Nether Update making tons of changes, Minecraft Live showering Minecraft fans with huge announcements like the Caves and Cliffs Update, and the recent announcement that Mojang Accounts for the Java Edition are migrating to Microsoft Accounts. Through all of it, we've had the How We Make Minecraft YouTube series, which takes a humorous look at some of the core characteristics of Minecraft, and just how the game came to be (and how it continues to evolve). The fourth episode is here, and this time around we're learning about...sound.

"The Sounds of Minecraft" goes over why Minecraft sounds the way it does, and it's a fascinating look at the thinking behind these decisions (with some charming and cheesy jokes thrown in along the way). The randomness of Minecraft means music is also random. Hostile mobs make sounds because sight can't be relied on. Random scary sounds play near caves because Minecraft kind of just wants to mess with you. If you're a fan of Minecraft, it's definitely worth a quick watch.

In case you've missed the rest of the series, the third episode of How We Make Minecraft covered artwork and visual design, which was fascinating.
